‘It should have been mine’: Teammate of Damar Hamlin devastated explains why he should win Comeback Player of the Year

“I don’t think there is anyone more deserving than my brother because I have seen the journey.”

After making a comeback to the field this season, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is now a finalist for the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Naturally, Bills cornerback Dane Jackson thinks Hamlin should be the worthy recipient of the honor.

Jackson and Hamlin have been friends since their undergraduate years at Pittsburgh, when they played together for four seasons between 2016 and 2019. After that, they were both selected by the Bills, where they have spent the whole of their NFL careers so far.

On Thursday, they both had a conversation about a variety of subjects with Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. Meirov then questioned Jackson over Hamlin’s prospects of taking home the Comeback Player of the Year trophy.

“As I have stated previously, I will reiterate it now. Since I have experienced the journey, I believe my brother to be the most deserving person. I have witnessed everything he has endured and overcome. Even on difficult days, he never showed signs of complaining. Every time, he would simply look at me and say, “This is what he loves to do.” My brother, I have nothing but admiration for you. And no one deserves it more than they do.

Because most of Hamlin’s on-field performance this season was restricted to special teams plays, some people don’t think he should be the winner.

But if you just consider who has surmounted the greatest challenge to go back on the field, there’s really no disputing that, considering his cardiac arrest issue from last season, Hamlin has surmounted maybe more than anyone in NFL history.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, Hamlin is currently the favorite to win the prize, with odds of -140. Joe Flacco of the Cleveland Browns, who is currently a mere +103 betting underdog, is his closest rival for the honor.
