Illan Meslier to be sold first for Leeds United to sign Alex Nubel amid £6.8m transfer news

Leeds United need to sell Illan Meslier first in order to fund a move for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alex Nubel, according to Bild.

The German newspaper reported on their website on Saturday (15 July) that Leeds want to make a permanent commitment to the Bayern ace, who wants to leave his current club.

Bild noted that Nubel, who is currently worth €8million (£6.8million), does not see his future with German giants Bayern.

“Nubel wants to leave as soon as possible: The goalkeeper does not see his future with Bayern,” according to Bild. “Bayern would rather sell him than lend him, but both options are still possible.

“Premier League relegated Leeds would like to make a permanent commitment to Nubel, but first have to sell goalkeeping talent Illan Meslier. The market value of the former Schalke is €8million at transfermarkt.de.”

Even if he did drop off towards the end of last season, Meslier is still a top goalkeeper, and his exit would be a big loss for the Whites.

The young Frenchman, who NBC Sports journalist Joe Prince-Wright (19 January) labelled “incredible,” has had his bad moments for Leeds, but he has also had some superb moments.

Meslier’s saves often rescued crucial points for Leeds, with the 23-year-old showing superb reflexes time and again after his defence had failed him.

But a string of errors cost him his place in the starting XI last season upon the arrival of Sam Allardyce, who opted for the more experienced Joel Robles between the sticks.

But the latter could not prevent the club from being relegated to the Championship, leaving the futures of many first-team players in doubt, including Meslier’s.

Given his potential, the goalkeeper should be sold for a substantial fee, with Leeds then able to use that money to try and persuade Bayern to let Nubel go to Elland Road.
