Mark Ashton has spoken about interest shown in Kieran McKenna prior to his recent long-term contract extension
Ipswich Town CEO Mark Ashton has confirmed that the club received interest in Kieran McKenna before the manager penned a new long-term contract this summer.
In a recent interview, Ashton explained how the new contract came to be.
Ipswich’s chief executive asserted that McKenna wanted to make sure his principles and those of the club were compatible and that a new contract could be reached quickly.
According to Ashton, who spoke with East Anglian Daily Times, “We talked about a new contract right at the end of the season.”
He checked to make sure that our club’s ideals and vision were still in line and that we hadn’t altered them, which we hadn’t.
And maybe a few days after the season ended, the two of us shook hands over his new contract.
“Due to holidays etc., that takes three to four weeks to complete.
“You will have read the press.
“He was highly regarded by other clubs in the business, so I think it’s perfect timing for us to lock him down for another four years.”
Ipswich is still getting ready for life in the second tier while the transfer window is still open.
With the pursuit of Ellis Simms failing, McKenna is looking to add a new striker to his team.
Coventry City and the Everton forward, 22, have reached an agreement on an £8 million transfer fee, according to reports from the Suffolk club.
Ipswich will need to shift their focus as they prepare for life in the Championship once more.
They’ll aim to fight in the top half of the table right away to demonstrate their competitiveness.
