Coventry City are poised to lose their star striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but it may not just be the Swede that Mark Robins loses from his front-line.

Gyokeres is about to replace Ellis Simms, an Everton forward, at the CBS Arena after agreeing to a substantial transfer price to Sporting CP.

Even with that acquisition, the Sky Blues still need to add attacking players because Tyler Walker and Sean Maguire left. However, given the interest in Matty Godden, a total makeover may be necessary.

Godden joined Coventry in 2019 after moving from Peterborough United, but this summer, League One promotion contender Derby County reportedly has him on their radar, according to Alan Nixon on Patreon.

There is only one year left on the 31-year-old’s City contract, but other teams are rumored to be interested in acquiring Godden this summer in addition to the Rams.

Ipswich Town and Queens Park Rangers are rumored to be interested in the Coventry man, thus DerbyshireLive reports that County have stiff competition in the race to capture Godden from the Championship.

How did Matty Godden perform for Coventry in 2022-23?

If he could maintain his fitness, another fruitful relationship with Gyokeres was anticipated, but despite being a member of a squad that advanced all the way to the Championship play-off final, Godden’s expectations weren’t quite met.

Godden had eight goals and four assists in 33 league games the previous season, although he also missed three months of the campaign due to a serious ankle injury.

He naturally bounced back to score five goals in the second half of the season, but with a year left on his Sky Blues deal, Robins and the hierarchy above him may need to make a choice if offers come in.

Who should Matty Godden sign for this summer?

All clubs would have to put a bid in for Godden of course, but there’s pros and cons for every club that are keen.

QPR are really lacking in the striking department and Lyndon Dykes needs someone to play with or rotate with at the top end of the pitch, so it is a link that makes sense.

Ipswich is another team that lacks a striker, and they were linked with Simms, who ultimately chose to join Coventry himself. Godden would be a step down in terms of age, but if he rotated with Freddie Ladapo and a younger striker for the Tractor Boys, it would be a good addition.

Of course, Derby too needs attackers, especially after David McGoldrick left for Notts County, but if Godden has Championship offers on the table, he might not be surprised by the Rams’ interest.

And you of course cannot rule out Godden remaining with Coventry – he was a big part of their plans last season and he could choose to see out his deal at the CBS Arena.
