The Dallas Cowboys may try to take a cue from the Kansas City Chiefs in order to contend for the Super Bowl in 2024.Reid Hanson of USA Today compiled a list of the best wide receiver free agents the Cowboys should seek.
Chiefs wide receiver Melcole Hardman, who just scored a touchdown catch to win the Super Bowl, is one intriguing name on the list. Hanson still mentions Hardman as a possible choice even though he thinks there are better matches for Dallas.
Hanson described Hardman as a slot receiver in a February 12, 2024 piece titled “Ranking the top-10 free agent WRs for the Cowboys in 2024.” Hardman is 5 feet 10 inches and 287 pounds. “The Cowboys are undoubtedly disappointed by this, as Lamb is their main slot player when playing with 11 players. Nevertheless, Hardman is a young, quick, and gadget-like player who may be a valuable addition to any offensive line looking to boost originality.
Dallas certainly isn’t a perfect fit even if speedster KaVonte Turpin has promise because the Cowboys haven’t even found a way to use him to his full potential.
Despite a rough season that began with the New York Jets, Hardman emerged as the Super Bowl hero. In order to reunite the wide receiver with Patrick Mahomes, New York decided to trade Hardman to Kansas City in October. This season, Hardman was paid $4 million for a one-year contract.
Dallas should be relieved that Hardman won’t likely break the bank this offseason. The wideout might have made a little bit more money, though, thanks to his Super Bowl performance. With three receptions for 57 yards, including the game-winning score, Hardman finished the Super Bowl.
After being dealt to Kansas City, Hardman had limited usage despite his stellar performance in Vegas. In six games during the regular season, Hardman caught 14 passes for 118 yards with the Chiefs in 2023.
During his brief tenure with the Jets, the wide receiver managed just one reception for six yards. Hardman’s output has decreased significantly over the past two seasons in the NFL after surpassing 500 receiving yards in his first three seasons.
The wide receiver for the Chiefs is not a big enough addition to elevate the Cowboys to the top of the NFC. Given that Hardman is a player capable of challenging for Dallas’ third receiving spot, it might still be a move worth taking into consideration.
With players like Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb’s rookie contracts ready to expire, Dallas’ previous strong draft classes are about to come due. Lamb’s $14 million, four-year rookie deal has ended.
The playmaker’s $14 million contract is set to expire in 2024 after a fifth year of option play. With his new contract, Lamb will probably get an even bigger boost. According to Spotrac, Lamb’s market value is $115.4 million for a four-year contract.
Although Lamb has become one of the best NFL receivers, the other wide receivers for Dallas had inconsistent 2023 seasons. Even though Michael Gallup is still being considered as a possible cap casualty this offseason, Brandin Cooks had a solid finish to the season.
