Ziaire Williams’ time with the Memphis Grizzlies could be done
Despite last season’s disappointment, the Memphis Grizzlies found a silver lining in the emergence of several young players who could potentially become part of the team’s core. However, as the Grizzlies look to improve their roster for the upcoming season, young forward Ziaire Williams might not make the cut.
Hasn’t proven himself enough
Williams, a 6-foot-9 small forward, is a player teeming with potential. This was acknowledged by the Grizzlies when they picked him 10th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft from Stanford University. In his rookie season, he displayed promise, averaging 8.1 points per game on 45 percent shooting in 61 contests. However, his performance has not been consistent, raising concerns about his future with the team.
Williams was unable to take advantage of the situation this season and only averaged 8.2 points on 39 percent shooting, including a dismal 30 percent from long range, despite all of Memphis’ big men being out with injury. This has many speculating that he could be leaving Grind City and joining a squad next season more suited to his abilities.
“After three dismal seasons in Memphis, Williams’ career hasn’t gone as expected. With the Grizzlies probably seeking to cut some weight, he is almost surely gettable. Nevertheless, Sam Quinn of CBS Sports stated that “his outlook is pretty bleak after shooting below 40 percent from the field in his third season.”

As mentioned, Memphis’ challenging 27-win season illuminated some players who could step up to more significant roles next season. This includes guard Vince Williams, who had a breakout season and averaged 10.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
With averages of 14.6 points and 4.1 rebounds, 19-year-old GG Jackson is the young player with the highest promise. In their final two games, the 6-foot-9 South Carolina big scored a career-high 44 points, capping off an explosive rookie year.
