A Michigan offensive lineman elaborates on why he believes the Wolverines will perform at the same high level in the trenches this year.
Michigan football plans to maintain its offensive line strength despite all six starting linemen heading to the NFL after the 2023 season. Both players and coaches are confident in the team’s ability to continue performing at a high level this upcoming fall.
Trente Jones, who filled in as right tackle during the team’s championship run, expressed optimism during Michigan’s Pro Day, attributing the team’s potential success in the trenches to coaching and personnel improvements.
Jones, a key member of previous award-winning offensive lines, anticipates that the offensive line will remain equally strong, if not stronger, moving forward.
The NFL hopeful backed his assertion by commending Grant Newsome, the new offensive line coach at U-M. Newsome, a former Michigan offensive lineman, has been involved with the program as a coach since 2018, starting as a student assistant, then progressing to a graduate assistant, and now serving in a full-time capacity.
Jones described Newsome as exceptionally knowledgeable about football, possibly the most intelligent person he knows. He highlighted Newsome’s academic achievements, noting his perfect 4.0 GPA, which underscores Newsome’s deep understanding of the game and his meticulous approach to coaching.
Despite Newsome’s seriousness about the game’s intricacies, Jones emphasized that he maintains a humble demeanor and prioritizes attention to detail and correctness.
Additionally, Jones mentioned the team’s depth, indicating that there were several other players beyond the starting lineup who could have easily stepped into starting roles during the 2023 season.
The team is set to have a fantastic lineup with players like Gio, Priebe, Crippen, Gentry, Persi, and Myles – you know, the big guy,” Jones remarked. “It’s going to be an excellent group.”
