Green Bay Packers accept a two-year deal worth $35.9 million with the Bears

Just two days after securing a deal with free agent Kevin Byard, the Chicago Bears have bolstered their secondary by adding depth at the safety position.

Tuesday saw the Bears and safety Jonathan Owens strike a two-year agreement aimed at strengthening the safety depth. Owens, 28, embarks on his sixth season in the NFL, having spent four years with the Houston Texans before joining the Green Bay Packers last season. During his time with the Packers, Owens participated in 17 games, starting 11, and contributed on 775 defensive snaps and 233 special teams snaps. In his tenure with Houston, he started 19 of the 31 games he played over four seasons.

Owens is married to gymnast Simone Biles, who holds the record as the most decorated American gymnast in history with 7 gold medals.

With Eddie Jackson no longer in Chicago, the Bears were in dire need of depth at the safety position. While Byard is expected to start alongside Jaquan Brisker, the addition of Owens, alongside Elijah Hicks, provides the Bears with some valuable depth in that area.
