Ezekiel Elliott – football player Dallas Cowboys

After a one-year hiatus away from the team, the Dallas Cowboys have decided to bring back three-time Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott ahead of the new season. The 28-year-old is a well-loved figure among the fans, which is why it comes as no surprise that the supporters have been rejoicing upon the return of their prodigal son.

Elliott’s comeback, however, also means that someone will have to go.

Apart from Elliott, the Cowboys also brought in veteran RB Royce Freeman this summer after the latter spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams. At this point, Zeke is fully expected to take the role of Dallas’ lead back, with the likes of Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn backing him up.

According to LP Cruz of Blogging the Boys, this will inevitably leave Freeman on the outside looking in:

“Failing to make the cut are veteran runners Royce Freeman and Malik Davis. Their goodbye at the end of the summer shouldn’t be seen as permanent, as either could be brought back at some point during the regular season,” Cruz wrote.

Cruz did note that it’s very much possible that Freeman (along with Malik Davis) could be brought back at some point in the season. Obviously, though, nothing is guaranteed.

Nevertheless, based on how things have been playing out thus far, it does seem like Freeman won’t be able to make the final roster cut ahead of Week 1.
