A move to Barcelona for Giovani Lo Celso is still being discussed as the January transfer window draws near.

Since Xavi thought he would be the perfect player to take Sergio Busquets’ place after he left to join Inter Miami, Barcelona was eager to sign him in the summer.

According to reports, the Spanish powerhouses even made an attempt to sign him in the summer, but the deal fell through.

Sport Witness has now provided information regarding the Spanish outlet AS’s abortive attempt to sign the Argentinean.

According to the report, Barcelona communicated with the player’s representative. Tottenham, however, declined to hold talks since Barca desired Spurs to cover a portion of the loan amount and did not intend to “pay a single euro” to take him on.

Clearly, this infuriated the Tottenham hierarchy, who scuttled the deal.

However, Xavi has reportedly asked the team to sign him in the next transfer window, which has rekindled Barcelona’s interest in the midfield player.

It remains to be seen if they approach Spurs with a more compelling offer this time around and if Tottenham is willing to let him go.

In James Maddison’s absence, Lo Celso has started to play more minutes and is proving Ange wrong.

He has made two of his last three starts, scoring a goal and putting on strong performances.

However, his contract only lasts for 18 months, so if a strong offer is made, Spurs might be inclined to cash in on him.

Nevertheless, everything hinges on their ability to sign one or more midfielders in the upcoming month.
