Dallas Cowboys slash $13 Million from cap with Zack Martin’s contract overhaul
The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the upcoming NFL league year by taking steps to restructure contracts and prepare their books. One of the latest moves involves guard Zack Martin, whose contract has been reworked to save the team $13 million, as reported by NFL Media.
Martin’s original base salary of $18 million, stemming from a two-year deal he signed with Dallas last offseason, has been adjusted. Along with the prorated $10.5 million signing bonus from his previous deal, he was initially set to count against the cap for $28.5 million. However, with the recent restructuring, his cap hit will now be approximately $15.9 million, with the remaining base salary conversion spread out over three void years attached to the contract last summer, along with an additional void year added in this conversion.
Zack Martin, a veteran with 10 seasons in the NFL, has consistently been recognized for his performance on the field. He has made the Pro Bowl and one of the two All-Pro teams nine times, with the exception of the 2020 season when he played only 10 games. Martin has been a first-teamer seven times, including each of the last three years. Widely regarded as one of the best guards and overall offensive linemen in the NFL, Martin is heading into the final year of his contract and will turn 34 years old during the 2024 season.
As the Cowboys continue to make financial maneuvers, there is speculation about potential cap-clearing moves. This includes the possibility of signing contract extensions for key players such as Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Reports suggest that the team might opt for a simple restructure of Prescott’s deal rather than an extension, which would yield less savings and pose risks related to potential future cap hits and player departures.
