‘Best player on the pitch’: BBC pundit amazed by ‘selfless’ Tottenham star after win against Newcastle

When Tottenham Hotspur defeated Newcastle United 4-1 on Sunday, Pat Nevin said that Son Heung-min was the best player on the field.

Nevin was speaking on BBC Radio Five Live following the Tottenham captain’s second-half 4-0 victory, which came about after Martin Dubravka brought him down.

Against Newcastle, Son Heung-min appeared to be back to his best. Tottenham was outstanding as Ange Postecoglou’s team resumed their winning ways.

Son Heung-min the best player on the pitch in Tottenham win

Son did a masterful job of setting up both of Spurs’ goals in the first half by finding Richarlison and Destiny Udogie. And after the Newcastle goalie had fouled him, he completed the scoring for the home team.

This season, Son has scored double figures in league goals by finding the bottom corner. And that’s what made Pat Nevin say that Tottenham gave a fantastic performance and that he was the best of them.

“We discussed the system that would be used and who would play it before the game started, and I honestly believed that’s exactly what would happen. Richarlison would go central, and Son would go left. It simply seems to fit. However, what you really need is a selfless individual like Son,” he said on BBC Radio Five Live.

“He can play as a wide player, as a 10, or as a nine, and he’s willing to give up that center forward position. In addition to having all of that, he also possesses the proper sense of team spirit. For this reason, Son is likely to be considered by most as the best player on the field right now.

Spurs captain a completely changed player this season

It’s amazing that Son has already scored the same amount of goals as he did during the entire previous Premier League season.

Actually, Son was pretty bad most of the season, so his return of 10 goals probably flattered him.

However, this season, he appears to be an entirely different player. Undoubtedly, he has flourished since assuming the role of captain. And on Sunday, the South Korean played the role of a captain.

Spurs will be hoping that their victory over Newcastle turns out to be a turning point in the season. However, they are always competitive, especially given how Spurs are playing under Postecoglou, even with Son healthy and available.
