‘Been amazing’ – Ex West Ham player praises performances of £15m Spurs signing

Don Hutchinson, a former midfielder for West Ham United and Scotland, has acknowledged that Destiny Udogie’s performances at Tottenham Hotspur thus far this season have disappointed him.

Udogie was transferred to Tottenham from Udinese for £15 million in August of last year, but as part of the transaction negotiated by the club’s former managing director of football Fabio Paratici (Sky Sports), the left-back agreed to stay with the Serie A team through the 2022–23 season.

The 20-year-old was playing for Udinese at the time, and Hutchinson said he had seen Udogie on several occasions. The Scotsman acknowledged that Udogie was a good player, but the player did not particularly stick out in Hutchinson’s eyes.

A solid start for Destiny Udogie at Tottenham

The new head coach Antonio Conte gave Udogie the starting left-back position earlier this summer, and the Australian has returned him with a strong start to his Spurs career, which has helped the North Londoners lead the Premier League table heading into the international break.

According to Hutchinson, “Udogie has been amazing.” he said to ESPN.

“I frequently ran across him while he was at Udinese. And although he wasn’t a star player, I thought he was terrific. But now that he’s returned to the Spurs, he’s been fantastic.

Luciano Spalletti was impressed by Udogie’s efforts for Tottenham and gave him his first senior hat on Saturday as a late substitution in Italy’s 4-0 victory against Malta.

With Ryan Sessegnon failing to live up to the hype due to a string of injuries and struggling to play consistently, especially while in and out of the starting eleven, the left-back position had been a trouble area for Tottenham in recent years.

Ben Davies is a reliable defender, although to be fair to the Welshman, he doesn’t pose any serious threats to the opposition when playing in the attacking half of the field.Ivan Perisic struggled in his left wing-back position under Antonio Conte despite appearing to be a superior choice higher up the field this season before suffering a terrible ACL injury that ended his campaign.
