President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski had a soundbite earlier this week that could be taken as a signal that the Phillies won’t be pursuing superstar talents like Juan Soto this winter.
“Well, I don’t think we need to add more star players,” Dombrowski said, per Delaware Online. “We have about as many stars as anybody in baseball … (Owner) John (Middleton) is very accommodating and giving, but you’re also in a position where you’re working with a payroll and trying to make things work for you going to the future.”
It’s unwise to believe Philadelphia will be out on anyone, but perhaps there is some validity to the belief that nine-figure superstars, especially Soto, will be outside the Phillies’ price range. But there may still be a 2024 club home run leader out there who can slot in as an everyday outfielder for the Phillies next season.
Tyler O’Neill, who paced the Boston Red Sox in home runs with 31, is about to hit the free-agent market, and his power profile could be an ideal fit for the Phillies. Christopher Kline of FanSided recently urged the Phillies to acquire the righty slugger.
“(O’Neill is) a slugging righty who goes to town on left-handed pitching, the ideal counterweight in an outfield that will still feature Brandon Marsh in 2025,” Kline said. “The Red Sox presumably want him back, but O’Neill should fall within the Phillies’ price range — even if Dombro
