Following Newcastle’s acquisition of Milan’s Sandro Tonali, rumors from the most recent England training camp stated Maddison is determined to join Spurs.
Newcastle still thinks they can make a bid for Maddison after paying an initial £55 million for the Italian Under-21 international in a six-year agreement that would rank him as the club’s second-highest move ever.
Leicester want £60m for the 26-year-old, who has one year left on contract, but Spurs’ initial proposal is around half that figure.
Tottenham wants a center defender and another forward, such as Harvey Barnes of Leicester, in addition to completing the £17.4 million signing of Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after the player passes his medical on Sunday.
Tottenham’s list of defensive options includes Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen, Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace and Wolfsburg’s Micky van der Ven.
Newcastle want a centre back, too, with Palace’s Joachim Andersen among those favoured.
Palace, meanwhile, are keen to sign Torino centre back Perr Schuurs.
