Tottenham target keen to join Spurs; piles pressure on club to accept transfer fees
David Raya has piled the pressure onto Brentford to let him leave the club, sharing his belief that he at the stage in his career where he wants ‘to step up’ and hunt for silverware. 
Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester United have all expressed interest in the Bees goalkeeper, who may challenge his countrymen David de Gea for the No. 1 spot.But Brentford are determined to hang onto the Spaniard or else lose him to the tune of a bumper £40million fee.
Despite a growing desire to move on, the 27-year-old has started for Brentford since their days in the Championship, joining the side in 2019. Helping the team earn promotion to the top flight will always keep the Bees near to his heart.
Raya told the New York Times, “I will always feel close to this team.” I will never forget being a part of the promotion to the Premier League.
‘I know there are rumors about my departure. There are various choices for me, but Brentford are obviously asking for a lot of money. That could put clubs off buying me and cause them to search elsewhere.’But if that’s the value they give me then it’s up to them. I have a year left on my contract and until then I’m a Brentford player, there’s nothing I can do.
Raya’s price tag has put discussions with Spurs on a knife’s edge, and United too are believed to be reluctant to pay as much as Brentford want, but Raya’s personal ambition could yet force the club’s hand.
‘I have ambitions to make the next step in my career. I want to try to win titles and to compete in Europe in the next couple of years.
‘I’m 27 now and I feel like I’m at the point in my career when I want to make that step up. There are options out there but it’s not just my ambitions, the club also needs to let me go.’
But despite his wish to move on, Raya will accept the decision over his future that he believes lies in Brentford hands.
The goalkeeper has one year left on his contract, and a move at the end of next season would see him leave west London as a free agent.
Raya said, “I’m a professional.” ‘If I end up staying at Brentford, I will always give it my all because that is my job.’If I have to stay, I’ll try to have an even better season than last season.’
Raya made the highest number of saves in the Premier League during Brentford’s 2022-23 campaign, ten more than his closest rival Bernd Leno from Fulham on 144 saves.
Following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Brentford in September 2021, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp stated that Raya ‘might wear No 10’ due to his excellent form out of the back.
