Former $90 million signing for Lions reportedly heading back to New England

ALLEN PARK — Trey Flowers, a former big-money signing for the Detroit Lions, is reportedly heading back to New England.
NFL Network reports Flowers will sign with the Patriots after recently visiting his old team. The 29-year-old edge defender spent three seasons with the Lions after inking a $90 million deal to leave New England in free agency. Flowers was the cream of the crop of the 2019 free-agent market after winning two Super Bowl championships, notching 21 sacks across four years for the Patriots.
Flowers remained one of the better all-around edge defenders through his first two seasons in Detroit. But injuries derailed his time, and another ho-hum season in 2021 ended his run. Flowers had 10.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles through 29 games and 27 starts for the Lions. And that casts him in the unfortunate territory of being one of the biggest free-agent busts in franchise history based on that $90 million contract.
The edge defender appeared in four games for the Miami Dolphins last season. He notched four tackles, with none for loss and no sacks. Flowers’ season was cut short with a foot injury, though.
