Report: Spurs may rethink plan to offload £21.6m player in January for the better

According to a report from The Times, Tottenham Hotspur may opt not to try to sell Bryan Gil during the January transfer window.

Erik Lamela, a Spanish international, moved to Tottenham from Sevilla in July 2021 in a swap-plus-cash deal for £21.6 million. However, Lamela’s stint in North London hasn’t quite gone as planned because he hasn’t managed to make the first team (The Athletic).

Gil has previously acknowledged that he found it difficult to adjust to the physical demands of playing in England during his first season at the club after coming from La Liga (Football.London).

After returning to Sevilla on loan and helping the team win the Europa League after joining Valencia the year before, the gifted winger left Tottenham for a second time in January.

Does Bryan Gil have a future at Tottenham?

Gil lost out on the chance to wow Ange Postecoglou during the preseason tour and instead stayed at Hotspur Way, where he underwent surgery in August to address a groin issue, the club said in a brief statement. As a result, Gil began the current season injured.

According to the report, Tottenham was initially focused on getting rid of a number of fringe players, including the 22-year-old, along with Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but they may now have to reevaluate in light of the injuries sustained by Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic.

Perisic received a complex anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee and underwent surgery as well, while Solomon suffered a meniscus injury to his right knee during training this week.

Tottenham must choose if the addition of Brennan Johnson is sufficient to allow the club to release Gil during the January transfer window or whether to hunt for a long-term replacement.

Gil appears to have little chance to play and force his way into Postecoglou’s plans with no upcoming Carabao Cup or European football matches, unless Totte nham’s ailments continue to deteriorate on the left side.
