West Ham’s new signing from Manchester City, Kalvin Phillips, has calamity written all over him

The purchase of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City by West Ham United this summer has calamity written all over it.

According to 90min, Manchester City player Kalvin Phillips is one of three central midfielders on West Ham’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, with Declan Rice largely anticipated to leave the London Stadium.

Hammers boss David Moyes has to get the central midfielder signing 100% spot on this summer if we are to make genuine progress as a club.

And I really don’t feel like Phillips is the man who we should be targeting…

In my opinion, Moyes shouldn’t be going anywhere near the 26-capped England international in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers boss needs to sign a physically robust player who can come in and pick up where Rice left off – the 24-year-old plays every single game for us after all.

Don’t get me wrong, Phillips is an excellent player, there’s no doubting that. However, the 27-year-old has experienced terrible problems with injuries over the past few years.

Since the start of the 2020/21 season, the 27-year-old has missed 216 days of action due to shoulder, hamstring and calf injuries (Transfermarkt). He’ll be 28 in December as well – hardly a young and hungry player with a point to prove!

WT Foot claim that Phillips earns around £130k-a-week at the Etihad. He will undoubtedly demand a big increase on that salary if he is to move to the London Stadium this summer.

Moyes definitely should be looking elsewhere in his quest to bring in an adequate Rice replacement. Someone like Edson Alvarez or Sofyan Amrabat would be far better suited to what the Hammers manager needs.

West Ham signing Kalvin Phillips would probably excite many West Ham fans. However, he’s just not what we need right now in my opinion.
