Despite winning two and drawing one of their first three league games without Harry Kane leading the charge, Tottenham Hotspur has had a strong start to the season under Ange Postecoglou. However, rumours suggest they are still looking to strengthen the attack.
Heung-min Son and Richarlison haven’t scored or provided an assist in 2023–24, so Spurs are seeking for a talented attacker to carry the load, and it seems like Ansu Fati has surfaced as a target.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham and Barcelona are now in negotiations for the loan signing of Fati. According to the journalist, Barca wants Spurs to cover the entire player salary.
The 20-year-old made 112 appearances in all competitions after moving from Sevilla to Barcelona in 2012. He scored 29 goals and added 10 assists. In 51 games last season, Fati had 14 goals and 14 assists, but he only made 14 starts (27%) of those games.
Despite appearing in all three of Barcelona’s league games this season, the £53 million-rated Spanish international has yet to make a single start. Tottenham wants to take advantage of the situation by giving him more chances, but it’s unclear if he’ll leave the Catalans. Given that they won’t have much time to find a replacement, Barca might also be unwilling to move.
Kane is a major loss for Spurs because he was traded to Bayern Munich after scoring 30 goals and dishing out three assists in 38 Premier League games last year. The Lilywhites need more players who can contribute, but James Maddison has impressed since moving from Leicester, scoring one goal and dishing out two assists.
Given that Fati contributed 11 goals from 36 league games in 2022–23, he would be an improvement over Dejan Kulusevski, who had a hand in nine goals from 30 league games last season, and Ivan Perisic, who had nine goals from 34 league games.
Good news for Tottenham comes from reports from Spain that Xavi would be willing to let Fati depart as long as he returned to Barcelona in the summer. Everything relies on whether they act quickly because there isn’t much time left to close transactions.
