Tottenham Hotspur to sell €45m midfield star to Atletico Madrid in surprise move: report
One midfield general will be sold by Tottenham Hotspur as the Ange Postecoglou revolution continues.
One of Tottenham Hotspur’s important midfielders is available for sale for €45 million.
Ange Postecoglou has moved quickly to add new players to a team that last season ended ninth in the standings. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario just signed, along with Manor Soloman, Pedro Porro, and Dejan Kulusevski, who were on loan from the previous season.
James Maddison, an England international, was recruited into the Tottenham team in what is likely the most significant transfer for the team. The 26-year-old’s emergence could drive out another veteran player in the lineup.
Spanish news agency AS claims that Spurs are prepared to allow Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to depart, and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is eager to seize the opportunity.
Although Hojbjerg isn’t one of the flashier members of the Tottenham side, he has been a staple under multiple managers since joining under Jose Mourinho. A leader in the centre of the park, he does a lot of the unglamorous work in the engine room – and earlier on in his career, was beloved by Pep Guardiola as a future star.
The Dane, who Spurs acquired from Southampton for just £15 million during the same summer that fullback Kyle Walker-Peters traveled the other way, is reportedly asking for €40 million.
Postecoglou is anticipated to employ a 4-3-3 formation, similar to what he did at Celtic, thus losing Hojbjerg may have to facilitate a move for a replacement while Rodrigo Bentancur recovers from a long-term injury.
The possibility of playing Champions League football at the Wanda Metropolitano, according the report, will be a deciding factor in any deal that involves Hojbjerg leaving north London.
According to Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old is worth €45 million.
