Tottenham Hotspur’s reported late approach for Nottingham Forest player Brennan Johnson has been updated by journalists Ryan Walker and Simon Jones.

Ange Postecoglou is aiming to replace Harry Kane’s goalscoring effect after the England international chose to join Bayern Munich in a potential £103 million transfer.

Kane, who scored 30 goals in 38 league appearances for Spurs last season, will be a difficult player to replace, but Postecoglou’s new-look and fluid side has performed admirably thus far.

Spurs’ Premier League triumphs over Manchester United and Bournemouth displayed the head coach’s brand of open, attacking game, but the club certainly needs more depth in the attacking areas ahead of a long season.

Postecoglou has had plenty of time to consider how he can replace Kane, with the Australian acknowledging that Tottenham’s former star had been eyeing the exit door for quite some time.

“I had a conversation with Harry the first day he arrived, and he was up front and honest, and I was the same,” Postecoglou said ahead of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Brentford.

“You get the impression that he’s made up his mind: that if the clubs agreed, he’d leave, especially if it was before the first game.” That was also my preference.

“There’s nothing along the way that has given me the impression that there is anything other than this outcome.”

Johnson, who was a key figure in Forest’s successful relegation battle last season, has been named as one of the top candidates for the position.

They are expected to make a late bid to sign Johnson, who Postecoglou admires for his mobility throughout the attacking zones.

However, there is a potential stumbling block in the form of Brentford’s interest, with the Bees resuming discussions to recruit the 22-year-old after initially withdrawing from the contest.

Johnson has eight goals and three assists in the league last season, for a total of eleven goal contributions. Ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder Chris Cohen was extremely enthusiastic about the player.
