Tottenham have reportedly reached an ‘agreement’ with defender Clement Lenglet, with just the agreement over the ‘final amount’ with Barcelona between them and the signing.

Ange Postecoglou, the new manager of Tottenham, is starting to put the previous season’s mistakes straight. By all accounts, the north London team’s season was a failure as they dropped to eighth place.

Their performance there was the lowest since the 2008–09 campaign. The results from last season make it clear that changes must be made if Tottenham is to succeed.

It was obvious that some parts of the field needed to be renovated. Hugo Lloris received a lot of criticism last season; Postecoglou has already brought in Guglielmo Vicario as a replacement.

Since Christian Eriksen left, Spurs have lacked a spark for innovation. One of the league’s top creators, James Maddison, has entered the room.

Dejan Kulusevksi’s permanent signing, which reportedly had been in doubt at one point, has also been confirmed. Pedro Porro’s contract has also been made permanent.

Indeed, Postecoglou will have to walk a tight line between keeping players who have contributed to the team and bringing in newcomers who he believes will perform better.

One loanee from the previous season has obviously performed well enough in his opinion to merit a permanent move.

Lenglet personal ‘agreement’ in place

An ‘understanding in principle’ about the center back Lenglet’s personal terms has been reached, according to the Spanish publication Sport.

The following stage will be to reach a fee agreement with Barcelona. According to the article, the transfer’s “final amount” has been debated “for several days.”

The defender may also be less expensive than Barcelona would want. The sale is ‘very vital’ for the Spanish giants, but Spurs do “not want to pay a lot of money.”

The report floats a figure of €10million (£8.6million approx), though ‘there is nothing agreed or closed’.

While that would see Lenglet move on the cheap, it’s suggested the contact that is currently ongoing is in order to see an agreement that would be ‘beneficial for all parties’.

Postecoglou follows Conte lead

When Lenglet was placed on Tottenham’s released list at the conclusion of the campaign, it came as a bit of a surprise. In fact, rumors had it that they were prepared to sign the defender, and by the time that list was made public, Postecoglou had already been hired.

As a result, it would have been reasonable to presume that he wasn’t signed at the time, given that he still wasn’t.

It appears Postecoglou sees a player who can help his team, much like his predecessor Antonio Conte did when he signed Lenglet on a loan.

Only four Premier League teams allowed more goals than Tottenham did last season, and three of those teams were demoted, so the defense will be carefully scrutinized.

Despite Lenglet being a part of that shoddy back line, Postecoglou clearly feels he can get more out of him alongside the other members of the defence than Conte could.
