According to reports from Italian media Spurs have been handed a boost in their attempt to lure Ibanez, with Roma lowering their asking price and it looks as though Tottenham could capitalize on that.
On Monday, Sport Witness provided an update from the Italian website Roma Giallorossa involving Spurs and Ibanez. Tottenham allegedly ‘intensified’ their discussions in the ‘past few hours,’ claiming that an official offer ‘within a few days’ is now a possibility.
Postecoglou is said to be a fan of the defender, and a bid of between €25 million and €30 million from Spurs could be enough to land him.
Who exactly is Roger Ibanez?
Ibanez is predominantly a centre-back, but he can also play as a right-back or a holding midfielder, giving Postecoglou’s side plenty of options if a deal is completed.
The 24-year-old appears to be at the pinnacle of his abilities, with a career-high €30 million Transfermarkt valuation and two senior caps for Brazil.
Ibanez has appeared in 149 senior matches for Roma, scoring 11 goals. According to WhoScored, the defender was Roma’s fourth-best player during the 2022/23 season, outperforming Tottenham’s Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Clement Lenglet, and Davison Sanchez.
As a result, with Spurs conceding the most Premier League goals in the top 14 last season (63), one could argue that a new defense is required. Someone like Ibanez, who appears to be at the peak of his game and has been dubbed “untouchable” by former Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho, may be a wise acquisition, and with Postecoglou a fan, a transfer appears to be on the cards.
