Son Heung-min, the captain of both Tottenham Hotspur and the men’s national team of South Korea, has stated that he prefers to lead by example rather than words.
In order for the Taegeuk Warriors to win their first game under new head coach Jurgen Klinsmann this month, Son will need to play a significant role.
Wales will be the opponent for Son and the rest of the red team in Cardiff at 7:45 p.m. local time on Thursday, or 3:45 a.m. on Friday in South Korea.
Then, on Tuesday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m. local time, that is 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, in Seoul, they will play Saudi Arabia in Newcastle, England.
Son said during his pre-game press conference in Cardiff on Wednesday that it was an enormous honor and privilege to serve as the club and national team’s captain. “I can’t say that I’ve done a terrific job or even that I like this work. However, I have always aspired to be a captain who leads by example rather than by words. And I believe that being captain has helped me to significantly develop as a person and a player.
After being appointed as South Korea’s new bench leader in late February, Klinsmann has failed to win any of his first four games while also recording two draws and two losses.
Despite his earlier promise to stay in South Korea to acclimate himself to the new nation and new football culture, he has also come under fire for spending more time in his US house than in South Korea.
Son will be relied upon by Klinsmann, a former Spurs player himself, to help South Korea get back on the winning track. Son joined the national squad in fine form, having just scored three goals in his most recent Premier League game against Burnley.
Son, who has led South Korea since 2018, also assumed leadership of Tottenham before the start of this campaign.
Son wasn’t fully healthy for South Korea’s June friendly since he hadn’t fully recovered from sports hernia surgery yet. Additionally, Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich, Klinsmann’s greatest defender, was absent because he was participating in his required military training.
Both of them are now fully recovered, and a few more players with teams in Europe also had productive weekends.
