‘He will surely get it’: Postecoglou eyeing first-team role for ‘phenomenal’ Tottenham teenager.

Ashley Phillips, a teenage Tottenham Hotspur player, is impressing new manager Ange Postecoglou greatly and will stick with the first squad.

Davinson Sanchez’s impending departure from Tottenham Hotspur suggests that Ashley Phillips will take on a larger role at the club.

According to Sky Sports, since moving from Blackburn Rovers in the summer, Phillips has ‘impressed’ Ange Postecoglou in training.

Phillips was acquired by Tottenham this summer for under £2 million, bringing the teenager from Blackburn Rovers.

Given that Phillips had already participated in 14 first-team games for Rovers, that felt like an incredible deal.

With a height of 6 feet 4 inches, the 18-year-old is a massive presence and seems to have made an impression on Postecoglou during his first few weeks at Tottenham.

According to a 90min story from August, Tottenham planned to send Phillips out on loan for the entire season in order to give him more first-team experience.

Postecoglou sparked the loan U-turn, thus Phillips is now remaining at Tottenham and is anticipated to play a larger first-team part than initially anticipated.

Ashley Phillips in line for big role at Tottenham Hotspur

On Monday, Tottenham made an unexpected choice and traded defender Davinson Sanchez to Galatasaray in Turkey.

Although Sanchez was available in the summer, Tottenham failed to sign a new center back by the deadline.

Despite having a serious shortage of depth at center back, particularly now that Eric Dier is not in Postecoglou’s plans, Spurs have nonetheless decided to flog Sanchez.

Tottenham might have serious difficulties if Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven were to get hurt, and Phillips appears to be in line for potential Premier League playing time.

Before that happens, Ben Davies might play center back, but if Sanchez is sold without a replacement, Phillips will likely play a far larger part than initially thought.

Tony Mowbray called Phillips “phenomenal” when he was in charge of Blackburn, and it appears that Postecoglou shares his opinion of the young man who is excelling at Tottenham.

90min reported in August that Tottenham were expected to send Phillips out on loan for the season with first-team exposure in mind.

However, Phillips is now staying at Tottenham and is expected to have a bigger first-team role than first thought with Postecoglou sparking that loan U-turn.

Tottenham made a surprise decision on Monday as they sold defender Davinson Sanchez to Turkish side Galatasaray.

Sanchez was available in the summer but the deadline passed without Tottenham bringing in a new centre back.

Spurs have still decided to flog Sanchez despite a real lack of depth at centre back – especially with Eric Dier not in Postecoglou’s plans.
