Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Ferland Mendy from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
According to reports, Real Madrid are willing to sell Ferland Mendy, and that has sparked interest in Arsenal.
Madrid, who won the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League last season, are willing to sell the left-back for €20 million (£17.5 million).
And Arsenal are reportedly willing to pay that transfer fee for the 27-year-old France international left-back.
Should Arsenal sign Ferland Mendy from Real Madrid?
In our view, Ferland Mendy would not be a bad signing for Arsenal in the summer transfer window, but the North London club should not be too excited about the Real Madrid left-back or should expect too much of him.
Yes, Mendy is a good left-back, but that Madrid are willing to cash in on the 27-year-old indicates that Los Blancos do not think that he is at the level that they need.
Yes, there have been injury problems and Eduardo Camavinga has also emerged as a very good option for Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti at left-back despite being a midfielder by trade, but you could still argue that Mendy has simply not been a ‘great’ player for Los Blancos.
Now, Arsenal do have a very good left-back in Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Kieran Tierney is a very good option as well.
However, there is speculation that Tierney will join Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.
So, there could be space for another left-back in the Arsenal squad.
For €20 million (£17.5 million), Mendy would be a decent signing for Arsenal, but only if the Gunners use him as a back-up to Zinchenko.
Experienced agent Yvan Le Mee told France Football in June 2019 that Mendy is “the Kylian Mbappe of the left-back role” and “is good offensively and defensively, which is very rare”.
Mendy has not really progressed a lot over the years, but he is a very good left-back who has experience in the UEFA Champions League and would make the Arsenal squad better, but not the starting lineup.
