Postecoglou must exploit player quality for Tottenham after Argentina example
Cristian Romero, a Tottenham defender, doubled his tally for Argentina with a thundering header in their 2-0 win over Indonesia on Sunday.
Cristian Romero’s 2022/23 season has been concluded. After more than helping his team win the World Cup in December, the Tottenham ace signed off for the season with a goal in Argentina’s 2-0 win against Indonesia.
Romero assisted Leandro Paredes’ first-half wondergoal to propel Albiceleste to another triumph after recording the same scoreline against Australia in China last Thursday. Romero, who had previously only scored once for his country, doubled his tally with a powerful header past the goalie after outjumping his marker.
All Tottenham supporters will recognize the man who assisted the 25-year-old, as it was fellow Spurs star Giovani Lo Celso who delivered the outswinging corner for his teammate to meet in style. After his goal, Romero sprinted up to Lo Celso with a dazzling smile as others arrived to join in the festivities.
In terms of his Tottenham career, the centre-back has only scored once for the club, in a 2-0 win away at Brighton & Hove Albion in March 2022. Dejan Kulusevski, on the other hand, may have something to say about the goal after his strike from the outskirts of the box caught Romero off guard and caught the goalkeeper off guard.
Although not on the scoresheet in the 2022/23 season for Tottenham, the World Cup winner did come close on a couple of occasions, including in the win over Crystal Palace in May as he struck the crossbar with a header. Scoring three goals apiece for both Genoa and Atalanta in 60 and 42 games respectively, it is something the highly-rated defender will want to add to his game for Tottenham.
It’s something Romero and the rest of the club’s defenders will undoubtedly want from new head coach Ange Postecoglou. During his two years at Celtic Park, the Australian’s midfielders contributed with remarkable goal totals, as did the team’s defenders.
In the 2021/22 season, Cameron Carter-Vickers finished his debut season in the east end of Glashow with four goals to his name. The ex-Tottenham man wasn’t as prolific in the opposition box last campaign, however, after only managing one goal in 39 appearances.
His centre-back partner, Carl Starfelt, did see a big improvement in terms of goals last term after contributing three in 37 games. The previous campaign the Swede had failed to find the net at all for Celtic.
After Starfelt had opened his Celtic account last August in a 5-0 win at Kilmarnock, Postecoglou opened up about the importance of ensuring the number have a number of goalscoring options and that they aren’t too reliant on the frontmen.
“We want to have multiple threats, it’s not about one person being the focal point of our scoring opportunities and avenues,” he added, according to the Daily Record. “It’s also encouraging that we’re getting contributions from our center backs.” We simply want to be a team that can cause havoc in a variety of ways. “I thought the quality of our goals was excellent, and the overall quality of our attacking play was good.”
With so much expectation on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to provide goals for Tottenham in recent years, Postecoglou, as he did at Celtic, will want others in his team to chip in on a regular basis. That should be the case with the head coach’s attacking 4-3-3 formation, as two of the three midfielders will be instructed to press upfield and help their attacking teammates.
Romero’s goal on Sunday demonstrated how good he is with his head when attacking the ball from a set piece, and Tottenham must make the most of his abilities.Unlucky on a few instances in his Tottenham career due to the crossbar and referee’s whistle, he will hopefully be able to add to his single Spurs goal under Postecoglou next season.
