Richarlison will be praying that his hat-trick in Tottenham’s friendly win over Lion City Sailors is a sign of things to come his way during the 2023/24 season.

Making his mark in north London in the opening weeks of his Spurs career with a Champions League double against Marseille, the summer addition from Everton endured such a frustrating debut campaign for the Lilywhites. Facing three separate spells on the sidelines through injury, it wasn’t until the end of April when he finally netted his first Premier League goal for the club.

Such a big year for the player as he looks to get his Tottenham career firmly on track under Ange Postecoglou, the 26-year-old’s Spurs woes appeared to carry on into the new term after wasting some glorious opportunities in their 3-2 friendly defeat against West Ham. However, he put them behind him and responded in the best way possible with a hat-trick vs Lion City Sailors.

Netting three minutes after his half-time introduction as he was in the right place to convert after Giovani Lo Celso had seen his low effort saved, the attacker then capitalised on a defensive mishap four minutes later before completing his hat-trick in the closing stages. Richarlison stated he was “over the moon” following his hat-trick heroics in an interview with SPURSPLAY after the game and he will now have his fingers crossed that more goals are to follow in Postecoglou’s team.

The chances will certainly be there for him over the course of the season if Tottenham’s eye-catching attacking play in their opening two friendlies can be transferred into the Premier League season. Spurs have so far registered an incredible 69 shots on goal in their two matches and it certainly bodes well moving forward as they look to get back to playing the attacking football the club are known for.

Quite whether Harry Kane will be the man leading the line at the start of the season remains to be seen. Now in the last year of his Tottenham contract, Bayern Munich have been heavily linked with a big-money move for the frontman and, at present, his future very much remains up in the air.

Going to be incredibly hard to replace the England captain if he is to depart as he is the club’s all-time record goalscorer as well as everything else he brings to the team, Postecoglou knows that Richarlison could provide him with an answer to the No.9 position as he has “got all of the attributes I look for in a striker”.

“I hope so. I’ve said before that I really like Richy,” said the Australian in his post-match press conference when asked if the striker’s confidence will now go up after his hat-trick. “He’s someone who has got all of the attributes I look for in a striker in that he’s got the strong work ethic, he’s always in the right areas and he’s presenting himself and making a presence of himself in the right areas for the way we play.

“He was probably a bit unlucky not to get a couple against West Ham that night. Again he was in the right areas today. I’ve got a lot of time for him and he’s one of the ones I’m looking forward to working with. From the outside you see a player and you try to picture how they fit into the kind of football you want to play and I certainly think he can.”

Indicating that Kane and Richarlison are different strikers, Postecoglou spoke about the Brazilian’s versatility and his “really strong work ethic” that people sometimes dismiss.

“They’re different strikers. They have different strengths,” admitted the 57-year-old. “Both though I think have a real presence in the penalty box and that’s why Harry has scored so many goals and why he’s one of the best strikers in the world.

“Richy is also a presence in the box in a different way so I think they’ve both got the right kind of qualities to play in that area and I think with Richy he can also play wide and as a second striker, mainly because he’s got, and I think people dismiss it a bit, a really strong work ethic. He works hard for the team and a lot of what he does doesn’t get seen.

“His pressing, his runs sometimes he doesn’t get the ball but he’s always making those runs and he’s a constant nuisance for defenders. So he can play a couple of positions for sure.”

One thing Richarlison will need on his side this coming season is luck given it totally deserted him during the 2022/23 campaign. A sustained run in the team could be key to finally flourishing for Tottenham, but, then again, that may all depend on what exactly happens in the Kane transfer saga and where the 29-year-old will be playing his football come the start of September.

While of course you must take Wednesday’s pre-season opponents into consideration when it comes to Richarlion’s hat-trick, the player was in the right place at the right time three times and his treble will only boost his confidence in the process. Regardless of whether Kane stays or goes this summer, Postecoglou needs an answer to the England striker when he is not in the side.

With Yves Bissouma viewed by some as a new signing for Tottenham and Postecoglou going on his struggles and lack of action last season, the same applies to Richarlison. Proving he can lead the line on numerous occasions as he is Brazil’s No.9 after all, the chance may arrive for the ex-Watford man to do the same this year for Tottenham.

There is so much more to come from Richarlison and Postecoglou could be key to the attacker realising his full potential at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
