Paul Merson hits back at his ‘clueless’ critics who mocked him for saying he’d be ‘shocked’ if Chelsea lose to Spurs – after Mauricio Pochettino’s side won crazy game against nine men

After Paul Merson accurately predicted that Tottenham would lose to Chelsea on Monday, the “clueless” fans ridiculed him on social media. Merson has responded to them.

Despite a strong showing from Ange Postecoglou’s remaining nine players, Tottenham, who faced an uphill battle after Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off for careless challenges, lost 4-1 against the Blues.

Just before the half, Dejan Kulusevski’s early goal for the hosts was cancelled out by Cole Palmer’s penalty, and Nicolas Jackson’s hat-trick in the second half put an end to Tottenham’s undefeated start to the campaign.

Although Spurs were in incredible form coming into the match in north London, Merson, a Chelsea supporter and former Arsenal player, said he would be “shocked” if Tottenham won.

On Monday night, Merson stated on Sky Sports, “I’m very confident for Chelsea.” “It will surprise me if they lose.”

On social media, a number of fans quickly made fun of the former England player. One Tottenham fan wrote on X, a platform that was formerly known as Twitter, saying, “Paul Merson needs to retire as a pundit when we beat Chelsea.”

After Chelsea’s victory, Merson bit back with a humorous retort, saying, “You will have to put up with me 4-1 more year at least.” I COYB.

In a different post, he added, “I hope you’re off to bed, all them people that called me clueless.” I COYB.

In addition, the pundit retweeted the video’s original post from Sky Sport, which featured a meme of American actor Kevin James shrugging his shoulders and cutting a shy figure.

After the thrilling victory, Chelsea moved up to 10th place in the Premier League standings, while Tottenham lost out on the chance to overtake reigning champions Manchester City at the top of the table.

After the loss, Spurs supporters won’t be overly concerned about Merson’s taunts, as important summer additions James Maddison and Micky van de Ven are hurt and both Romero and Udogie are now suspended.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team will feel more confident after the win when they play City in the Premier League the following weekend.

With a severely diminished squad, Tottenham must now manage a challenging stretch of games against Wolves and Aston Villa before taking on the champions in early December.
