Newcastle evening headlines with Howe’s transfer update, Klopp’s ‘knock’ and Tierney admission

Howe on transfers
Eddie Howe now gets the opportunity to fully work with Harvey Barnes with the winger not training yet and being thrown straight in at the deep end against Villa. Howe is also hopeful that things can move on transfer-wise with sights set on senior addition number three of the summer.
Southampton’s Tino Livramento is one of them with the fee continuing to prove a difficulty for the Magpies. The right-back is believed to be keen on the move to St James’ Park.
Speaking on transfers, Howe said: “Mentally you are always on to the next one. “We were keen to get Harvey done and we have.
“Now we are looking at what other areas we need to strengthen, there are a couple of other areas we are looking at. “Whether we are able to do those deals and fill those positions let’s wait and see.”
Barnes’ motivation
Harvey Barnes has said he did not need the idea of Newcastle United to be sold to him this summer.
For Barnes made it clear the club sold itself to him with the Champions League journey about to start in earnest and the Magpies due to set sail for Europe next September. Barnes has made just one appearance in the competition for Leicester CIty but is now hungry for more.
Barnes told reporters after his debut: “It was great – I have sort of been anticipating it the last couple of days, but to finally be here with the lads feels great. To finally be here is good. I have not trained with the team or had many sessions either.
“So good to get the legs going tonight. [I’m] a little bit rusty but look forward to getting that sharpness back and look forward to the rest of the games.”
Anderson headache
When asked if Anderson was giving him a welcome headache but more importantly a decision to make, with the opener against Aston Villa in mind, Eddie Howe told Chronicle Live: “Yeah. You are looking at all players to make a positive impression a nd to stake their own claim.
“It is a team game and we want the team to do well, but ultimately I am going to have a decision come the first game of the season of who I am going to pick.
“That is going to come down to all the evidence that I’ve got. All the games that we have played, the training behind the scenes and I have to try to pick a team that can win. Elliot has done himself no harm. He has been hugely impressive.”
Tierney on future
Kieran Tierney admits his future is out of his hands with Newcastle United among the clubs linked with a move for the Arsenal defender. The Scotland international fell down the pecking order with the Premier League runners-up last term, with Oleksandr Zinchenko emerging as Mikel Arteta’s first choice left-back.
Tierney still has three years to run on his contract in the capital, but has been widely tipped to depart ahead of the new season. Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for the 26-year-old, with Eddie Howe said to be keen on bringing in a new left-back.
However, Celtic are also said to be in the mix to land their former defender, with Brendan Rodgers refusing to rule out a move when asked about the prospect of a remarkable return. Tierney made just six Premier League starts last season, and has confirmed he was free from injuries throughout the campaign.
The defender appeared from the bench during the Gunners’ friendly defeat to Manchester United in New Jersey. Tierney was quizzed on his future following the full-time whistle, and later stressed he was studying Zinchenko’s performances in order to improve his own game.
Martin on Livramento
Southampton boss Russell Martin insists all his players are ‘still here’ for the time being as Newcastle United seek a deal for right-back Tino Livramento. The Magpies submitted another bid for the 20-year-old in recent days but the Saints are desperate to keep hold of the Chelsea academy graduate.
Southampton are demanding north of £30m for Livramento, who is seen by many as the ideal heir to Kieran Trippier. The youngster impressed on the south coast before suffering a nasty anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2022.
Livramento is back to full fitness and featured in Southampton’s 4-2 win over Reading on Saturday and Martin has been using the full-back as a central midfielder when in possession and on the flanks at other times in an attempt to keep him sweet. The St Mary’s boss wants his star defender to stay beyond the summer and has played down talk of an imminent exit.
Klopp on ‘proper knock’
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool were given a ‘proper knock’ after Newcastle United leapfrogged the Reds into the top four.
Newcastle qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years following a remarkable campaign that saw the Magpies finish four points clear of Liverpool in fourth place last time out. To put that turnaround into context, Newcastle ended the previous season a whopping 43 points behind Liverpool.
Yet Newcastle are not resting on their laurels. Quite the opposite, in fact, after already spending more than £90m on Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes. Eddie Howe has warned that his side ‘have to improve quickly’ because other clubs that ‘did not have the season they wanted will come back fighting’.
Liverpool will have been at the forefront of Howe’s thoughts when the Newcastle boss made those comments and Klopp has, also, wasted no time in strengthening his side, having brought in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig. Missing out on the top four for the first time in seven years has clearly left its mark on a wounded Klopp.
Dawson’s U21s challenge
Ben Dawson has challenged Newcastle United’s young stars to ‘be memorable’ as they look to catch Eddie Howe’s eye this season. The Magpies Under-21s fell to a 2-0 defeat against Carlisle United on Saturday afternoon as two Ryan Edmondson goals condemned Dawson’s side to a loss in their third pre-season friendly.
There were plenty of positives for Dawson and his coaching staff as the likes of Lucas De Bolle, Amadou Diallo and Max Thompson all impressed against a Cumbrians side that are putting the finishing touches to their preparations for life in League One this season.
Dawson was without the likes of Lewis Miley, Alex Murphy, Jay Turner-Cooke and Joe White after they travelled to the United States with the Magpies senior men as part of their squad for the Premier League Summer Series.
