‘Most sought after’: Tottenham told they may soon secure transfer coup

Spurs keen on Empoli stopper as alternative to David Raya.

Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca feels Tottenham would pull off a coup if they sign Vicario.

Spurs have identified the Empoli goalkeeper as a potential replacement for David Raya and are in advanced negotiations to sign the 26-year-old.

Brentford goalkeeper Raya has been linked, but the two London clubs remain far apart in their appraisal of the Spanish international, with the Bees demanding £40 million.

Vicario is expected to be available for less than £20 million as new boss Ange Postecoglou searches for a new goalkeeper.

Hugo Lloris, the club’s long-serving captain, is poised to leave this summer after stating his desire for a fresh challenge.

Reports in Italy suggest the goalkeeper will soon head for a medical in north London and Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi has spoken of his “pride” in selling Vicario to Spurs.

In quotes sourced by the Italian Football Podcast, Pagliuca said: “Vicario is a very good goalkeeper, he will be the most sought after goalkeeper of the transfer window.

“He’s the goalkeeper I like the most in Serie A and has the right maturity now for the step up.”
