LOAN DEAL LOOMS: Tottenham may fancy sending player to St Mary’s, report claims

Southampton are interested in a loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence, claims an emerging report from Football League World.

Spence, 23, is yet to kick-on following his move from Middlesbrough to Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

The right wing-back impressed during a loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the 2021/22 season, which ended in promotion for the Reds.

And his impressive campaign caught the eye of many big clubs, though it was Spurs who landed the Englishman in a reported £20million deal.

But he managed just four Premier League appearances last season and now it looks like he’s heading out on loan, with Southampton apparently interested.

FLW claim that Southampton are not only interested in a loan deal, but that Spurs view St Mary’s as an ideal loan destination for Spence given the Saints’ possession-based style of play under new boss Russell Martin.

Southampton have some decent options at right-back in names like James Bree and Kyle Walk-Peters – the latter though has had links away from the club this summer.

And Spence would give Martin a very useful, more attacking outlet on the right, and it’s no surprise to hear that Spurs fancy Southampton as a potential destination for Spence.

They play some great football under Martin and a player like Spence could really flourish at the club, especially as the players get more acclimatised to the brand of football under Martin.

Whether or not Spence favours a move to the Championship remains to be seen – he previously shone in this league but he’s yet to really get a chance in the Premier League, so he might be eager to prove any doubters wrong.

‘My information is’: Journalist says 26-year-old Spurs player really hasn’t impressed Postecoglou

There’s a real dichotomy surrounding the Frenchman. On one hand, he’s an immensely talented player who looks like he should be a world-class superstar, but, on the other hand, he just hasn’t done it for Spurs over the past few years.

Heading into this summer, the Frenchman had a clean slate under a new manager, but, once again, it looks like he’s failed to cut the mustard.

Indeed, according to Tom Barclay, speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Ndombele’s performances in training haven’t gone down particularly well, and he’s not managed to win anyone over at the club.

not doing it

Barclay shared what he knows about the 26-year-old.

“Ndombele it’s the same for him, he’s on massive wages. He didn’t pull up any trees at Lyon or Napoli. He’s had his chance at Spurs, and he hasn’t impressed in this time. My information is it’s not gone down particularly well, he’s not won anyone over put it that way. So they will sell him as well, but that will be tricky, maybe they’ll have to loan him again,” Barclay said.

Unfortunately for Ndombele, it looks like he’s had his final shot in the last chance saloon.

The midfielder had one final chance to really re-invent himself at Tottenham this summer, but, sadly, it looks like he’s squandered this opportunity.

As Barclay says, the player will now likely be sold, but due to his mammoth wages, getting any sort of fee for him will be very difficult, so another loan could be on the cards.

Regardless of what happens to Ndombele this summer, it does look as though he may have played his final game in a Spurs shirt.
