‘HE LOVES THAT RESPONSIBILITY’: JAMIE CARRAGHER IN AWE OF ‘WORLD-CLASS’ TOTTENHAM PLAYER

James Maddison joined Tottenham from Leicester City earlier this summer and was able to make an instant impact on his debut after recording two assists in his side’s 2-2 draw with Brentford.

Speaking about the attacking midfielder on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “I think on the back of [Harry] Kane going, he’s taken his shirt. I think he had the armband in the second half.

“It almost feels like he’s one of the main players at Spurs and he’s only had one game.

“He loves that responsibility. I love seeing him interviewed. He’s got that little bit of cheekiness about him.”

James Maddison already looks like one of the signings of the season

Bringing him in for £40m, Maddison always looked like a bargain in this current climate.

Another Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes that the 26-year-old is actually worth more than £100m. “Over £100m for him,” he said earlier this year. “Chelsea spent £110m on [Enzo] Fernandez, you’re buying potential with him, Maddison is a great player.”

Last season, Maddison scored 10 Premier League goals and provided nine assists in a very poor Leicester side, showing the kind of threat he can be in the final third.

He is also dangerous from set pieces, with his national team manager Gareth Southgate labelling his delivery “world class”.

It is very easy to see why Tottenham signed the England international and had Leicester not been relegated, perhaps the north London club would have been looking at a fee closer to £100m.

With their London rivals Chelsea having signed Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion for £115m, would it really have been that far-fetched for the Foxes to demand such a figure? Perhaps not. The Blues may have set a dangerous precedent now.

Fortunately for Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou, though, they were able to land Maddison for just £40m, which is already proving to be money well spent.
