Fabrizio Romano issues Leeds United transfer update amid links to Chelsea defender

Leeds United have now agreed on personal terms with Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu and are set to finalise his signing, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Sky Sports Italy and Guardian journalist took to Twitter [17 July] to make this revelation and also cited a £7million fixed fee plus add-ons.

He will be the third summer signing but the first one for the senior side as Josh McDonald and Lewis Pirie will be joining the under-18s/under-21s.

Via Twitter, Romano wrote, “Ethan Ampadu leaves Chelsea and will join Leeds United on permanent deal, agreement in place. Chelsea will receive £7m fixed fee plus add-ons.”

Good deal

Ampadu may not be a name that excites Leeds fans but neither were most of the defenders they signed in the Premier League.

He’s been on Chelsea’s books for a while and has impressed on loan spells both in England and at clubs outside the United Kingdom.

At 22, he certainly is not just one for the present but offers a long-term fix to an important position or two, if Daniel Farke has other ideas.

The Exeter-born player can play as a centre-back as well as a defensive midfielder and he could be a key signing for Leeds.

The club look to be pulling out all stops to keep Tyler Adams at the club, but in case he leaves, they’ll need someone to replace him.

Empadu could do that role perfectly as he’s good on the ball as well but the feeling is that he’s being signed as a centre-back
