Champions League side now in talks over fee for ‘fantastic’ Spurs player left out of squad this weekend

Tottenham Hotspur are now in talks with Lazio over a fee for Hugo Lloris with the Serie A side pushing to sign the Frenchman this summer.

That is according to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, which notes that Biancocelesti are very keen to sign the goalkeeper who appears to have no future in North London.

It is a surprise that Hugo Lloris remains at Tottenham at this stage of the window. The 36-year-old’s form had been in decline for some time. And it was abundantly clear that Spurs needed a new number one.

Lazio discussing Lloris fee with Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou’s men signed Guglielmo Vicario. And it was Vicario who started in goal for their opening day draw with Brentford at the weekend. Meanwhile, Brandon Austin was on the bench.

Lloris is surely going to leave in the near future. It surely does no-one any favours if the veteran remains at Tottenham beyond the deadline.

But perhaps it could be Italy which proves to be Lloris’ next destination. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Lazio really want Lloris. Meanwhile, they are discussing terms over a potential fee.

There is surely little chance that Tottenham keep hold of Lloris beyond the window. Ultimately, he has served the club so well. He has been ‘fantastic‘.

And it is clear that Spurs have now moved on from him. So they are hardly going to hold out for a huge fee at this stage of his career or the window.

It may be that they are able to agree terms with Lazio, or another club may come in. But surely, it is a safe bet to assume that Lloris will not be at Tottenham beyond the deadline.

The post-Harry Kane era at Tottenham got underway on Sunday, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Spurs failed to win their first game without Kane.

Indeed, a 2-2 draw was the result at the weekend, but that doesn’t tell the whole story of the match.Spurs looked incredibly bright in their first league game under Ange Postecoglou, and they can count themselves rather unlucky that they didn’t come away with all three points.

Without Kane in the squad, some of Spurs’ other players were brilliant, and according to Nedum Onuoha, speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, James Maddison was actually better for Kane not being in the side.

Onuoha gave his verdict on the £45m midfielder.

“Think of it this way, would Maddison be able to play the same way if he had someone with Kane’s tendencies dropping deeper and stuff like that? All of a sudden that might disappear. I think he was better for them,” Onuoha said.

Hard to say

James Maddison had a fantastic game on Sunday, but it’s hard to say whether or not he’d have been better with or without Kane.

On one hand, we can understand the argument that Kane could have the tendency to get in Maddison’s way when he drops deeper, but, at the same time, Kane was a very intelligent player who knew where to be and when.

Maddison and Kane did look bright together in pre-season, and we can’t help but think that they would have been amazing if they did end up playing together.

Maddison was fantastic at the weekend, but we can’t agree that he was better due to Kane’s absence.
