Due to rumors of a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona has exempted Clement Lenglet from first-team practice until next week.
Lenglet was not a part of Barca’s return to preseason practice on Monday, the team’s official website has revealed.
Lenglet won’t be expected to report for training until July 18th, which is one week from today.
Lenglet did show up for medical testing on Monday, but that is all he did because Xavi doesn’t allow him to train with the first squad.
The only rational explanation for this situation is that Lenglet is being allowed time off to finalize a transfer, which involves Tottenham.
Spurs allegedly closing in on Clement Lenglet
Last night, shortly after Barcelona made their announcement regarding Lenglet, Mundo Deportivo published an update on the defender’s condition.
According to them, Lenglet will now sign a contract with Tottenham in the upcoming days.
If an agreement with Spurs cannot be reached, Lenglet is rumored to fly to Barcelona’s US tour the following week.
Lenglet is reportedly being left behind to try to negotiate a long-term transfer to Tottenham, according to the Catalan press.
Although there was no permanent option in the agreement, Lenglet spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham.
Thus, rather than having a predetermined cost for Tottenham to activate, the teams must now engage in negotiations.
Lenglet has been hailed as ‘excellent’ by Cristian Romero but we can’t get excited about a permanent move to Spurs.
Tottenham should avoid Lenglet deal
Lenglet might be inexpensive, but that doesn’t necessarily imply it would be a good deal.
Last season, the Frenchman was merely ordinary, so a permanent transfer wouldn’t excite anyone.
Lenglet has demonstrated that, unlike a target like Edmond Tapsoba, he does not improve the caliber of the Tottenham starting XI.
Lenglet, a left-footed player who has been a target for Spurs, is not a player with a lot of promise or resale value at the age of 28.
