However, on Tuesday afternoon, Michigan’s resilience surfaced through their defensive efforts, as they shut down Toledo after the second inning and maintained their strong defense for the remainder of the game.

“Junior third baseman Cole Caruso remarked, “We faced significant challenges last weekend. Despite trailing by six runs, witnessing our team continue to compete and battle was immensely important. I believe this experience serves as a significant confidence boost for us.”

Sophomore center fielder Jonathan Kim displayed an unusual lack of precision against the Rockets. Known for his reliability in the outfield, Kim mishandled two fly balls and exhibited delayed reactions when connecting with the infield, which allowed Toledo to capitalize. One notable mistake occurred in the second inning, where Kim’s error resulted in two runs and loaded the bases.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jonathan Kim grounded out to second base during his first at-bat. However, while sliding into first base, he sustained a hand injury, forcing him out of the remainder of the game. This necessitated several substitutions, with freshmen stepping in to fill Kim’s position in center field, resulting in an outfield comprised mainly of newcomers.

Michigan coach Tracy Smith commented on the situation, stating, “(Kim’s) injury at first base led to multiple substitutions. We went from Kim to freshmen, and they’re all works in progress, gradually shaping into the players they aspire to be.”

Despite these alterations, the outfield tightened its defense. Junior left fielder Joe Longo executed a diving catch on a foul fly ball, while senior center fielder Trevor Kilinski made consecutive catches later in the game, preventing the Rockets’ runners from advancing to third base.

Smith praised Trevor’s dedication to practice, highlighting his consistent hard work despite limited playing time. Utilizing multiple players from the roster to secure a victory is always gratifying, according to Smith.

While the outfield performed well, Michigan’s defense truly shone through its execution of double plays and cohesive play in the infield. Seamless connections between shortstop, second base, and first base effectively kept Toledo’s offense at bay. The Wolverines executed two double plays during the game, showcasing the synergy within the infield. Despite facing bases-loaded situations in both the fourth and eighth innings, Michigan prevented the Rockets from scoring.

Particularly, Dernedde, Timbrook, and junior catcher Will Rogers played pivotal roles in Michigan’s defensive success on Tuesday, combining for a total of 13 put-outs.

Among the three players, Dernedde’s leadership was particularly evident in this match, as his impact stretched from left field to second base. He even absorbed the force of one of Toledo’s bats in his abdomen, grunting as he still managed to throw the ball to Voit for the out. Timbrook mirrored Dernedde’s influence on the right side of the diamond, frequently venturing into the outfield to support the understaffed unit.

Behind the plate, Rogers delivered his most dynamic performance of the season. He made four solo put-outs and successfully caught two runners attempting to steal. As at-bats grew more critical, the Rockets resorted to hitting foul balls to prolong their time at the plate. However, Rogers thwarted this tactic on multiple occasions, making assertive grabs and leaving Toledo with minimal breathing room.

“We found our rhythm and prevented them from scoring for the remainder of the game,” Smith remarked. “There were crucial pitches and plays that made the difference today.”

While Michigan’s defensive performance was not flawless, the team had to fight to regain momentum and ultimately secure a victory after a demanding 12 innings. However, it was the strength of their defense that provided Michigan with the chance to prevail.
