Last week, the 49ers’ attempt to acquire a backup tight end was thwarted.

However, a man who has been following Cameron Latu attentively for a number of years is still holding out hope that he can become a dependable, steady, and all-around performer.

Reese’s Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy discussed his scouting of Latu and the high marks he gave the former Alabama tight end before the 2023 NFL Draft on 49ers Talk.

“We spent two years with him,” Nagy remarked. “We had fringe top-100, third-, and fourth-round type grades.” I believe he went where we recognized his worth.

Last year, Latu had a fantastic week in the Senior Bowl. Three months later, Latu was drafted by the 49ers in
